    Abstract

This IBM Redbooks® publication describes the features and functions of the latest IBM Z® platform members that are built with the IBM Telum® processor: IBM z17™ ME2 and IBM z17 MER. It includes information about the IBM z17 ME2 and IBM z17 MER processor design, I/O innovations, security features, and supported operating systems.

The IBM Z platform is recognized for its security, resiliency, performance, and scale, and it is relied on for mission-critical workloads. The IBM Z platform is an essential element of hybrid cloud infrastructures. IBM z17™ ME2 and IBM z17 MER add more capabilities and value with innovative technologies that are needed to accelerate the digital transformation journey.

IBM z17 ME2 and IBM z17 MER are state-of-the-art data and transaction systems that deliver advanced capabilities that are vital to any digital transformation. The IBM z17 ME2 and IBM z17 MER are designed for enhanced modularity in an industry-standard footprint. They offer clients the choice of factory-frame (IBM z17 ME2) or rack-mounted (IBM z17 MER) configurations to install in their own data center rack infrastructure. These systems excel at the following tasks:

    • Artificial intelligence (AI) inference with Integrated Accelerator for AI
    • Using multicloud integration services
    • Securing data with pervasive encryption
    • Accelerating digital transformation with agile service delivery
    • Transforming a transactional platform into a data powerhouse
    • Getting more out of the platform with IT Operational Analytics
    • Accelerating digital transformation with agile service delivery
    • Revolutionizing business processes
    • Blending open-source and IBM Z technologies

This book explains how these systems use innovations and traditional IBM Z strengths to satisfy growing demand for cloud, analytics, and open-source technologies. With IBM z17 ME2 or IBM z17 MER as a base, applications can run in a trusted, reliable, and secure environment that improves operations and lessens business risk.
