IBM System Storage Solutions Handbook

This IBM Redbook provides overviews and pointers for information about the most current IBM System Storage and TotalStorage products, showing how IBM delivers the right mix of products for nearly every aspect of business continuance and business efficiency. IBM TotalStorage products can help you store, safeguard, retrieve, and share your data.

- First we introduce the basic storage solutions areas: information lifecycle management, infrastructure simplification, and business continuity.

- Part 1 describes disk products, including the entire Disk Storage (DS) Series, from entry-level offerings to mid-range with the DS4000 family and DS6000, to high end with the DS8000. It also includes the DR550.

- Part 2 is an overview of tape products, covering tape drives, tape libraries, and virtualization products, including LTO and 3590, and 3592 technology.

- Part 3 starts by describing storage networking infrastructure and protocols, and then presents the switches and directors to form SAN solutions.

She has 15 years of experience with IBM in storage hardware and software support, deployment, and management. She has written many Redbooks, and has developed and taught IBM classes in all areas of storage and storage management. Before joining the ITSO in 2000, she was the Technical Support Manager for Tivoli Storage Manager in the Asia Pacific Region.

Leonardo Higuera (Leo) is a Hardware Country Specialist in IBM Colombia. He holds a degree in Systems Engineering and is also a Graduate in Management of Projects. He has worked at IBM for 11 years. He has several years of experience working with Intel-based system and storage solutions. His areas of expertise include High-Availability, Virtualization, Consolidation, design, deployment, and implementation of complex solution, management of critical situations, and customer satisfaction.

Carsten Krax is a Storage Specialist within the IBM Systems Sales Organization in Germany. He is an expert on Business Continuity and Infrastructure Simplification solutions for open systems. His areas of expertise include Disk systems, Tape systems, SAN, NAS, and Storage Software. Before joining IBM in early 2001, Carsten worked from 1999 to 2001 as Storage Specialist for an IBM Business Partner, and from 1995 to 1998 as a Systems Administrator for an IBM customer. He holds a degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Applied Sciences in Dortmund, Germany, and has coauthored several IBM Redbooks on tape.

• Carsten Krax

John Kuo is an I/T specialist for Open System responsible for Networking and Storage services support in IBM Taiwan. He has 17 years of IT experience and has previously been a zSeries System Service Representative. His current major responsibilities include DS4000, DS6000, and SVC country support. As well as regular product problem determination, problem solving and fault isolation tasks, he is also takes part in many Business Continuity projects delivering Metro Mirror and Global Mirror functions on ESS and DS8000.
