Guide to Data De-duplication: The IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway

This IBM® Redbooks® publication describes the IBM solution for Data De-duplication, the IBM System StorageTM TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway. This solution consists of IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V2.1 software and the IBM System Storage TS7650G De-duplication Server (3958-DD1) hardware. It is designed to address the disk-based data protection needs of enterprise data centers.

In this book, we introduce Data De-duplication and describe in detail the components that make up the TS7650G solution. We provide extensive planning and sizing guidance that enables you to determine your requirements and the correct configuration for your environment. Babette Haeusser is an IBM Certified IT Specialist at the International Technical Support Organization, Tivoli/Storage/Technology Solutions. She writes extensively and teaches IBM classes worldwide on all areas of Enterprise and Open Systems Tape, Tape Libraries, Tape Encryption, and Tape Virtualization. Babette joined IBM in 1973 as an application programmer. In 1987, she became an MVS Systems Engineer and specialized in IBM Storage hardware and software, which she has supported in various job roles since then. Before joining the ITSO in early 2005, Babette worked in the Advanced Technical Sales Support EMEA. She led a team of specialists for Enterprise Storage. Babette focused on Enterprise Tape, including tape libraries and Virtual Virtualization solutions.

Alessio Bagnaresi is a Cross-Brand System Architect at IBM General Business Division in Bologna, Italy. He joined IBM in 2006 and worked during the first year as an IT Specialist, mainly on IBM System x and Storage platforms. Before joining IBM, he worked as a System Engineer for a big company in Italy where he managed multiple e-government projects on Linux, Windows, and AIX platforms. Currently, he is certified on Linux, VMware, and Citrix products, and his job includes the planning, design, and implementation of Business Continuity, Disaster Recovery, Backup/Restore, and Server/Storage Consolidation solutions involving IBM System p, System x, and System Storage platforms.

Michael Bocian is a Software Test Engineer for eRMM / IRMM located in Mainz, Germany. He joined IBM in 1976 and worked for many years as a maintenance technician for disk production equipment and robotics. For the last 10 years of this period, he lead a team of maintenance technicians with special tasks and responsibilities. In 1999, Michael became a Product Field Engineer for Open Systems Tapes and Libraries in the European Storage Competence Center. Here he provided support for all types of LTO tape drives and Open Systems tape libraries. Since 2007, Michael works as a Software Test Engineer for eRMM / IRMM. His job includes developing and executing test scenarios for eRMM / IRMM components on various tape drives and libraries on various OS platforms.

Rik Foote is Team Leader of a Storage Management team for IBM Global Technology Services in New Zealand. He has 12 years experience working with and supporting mid-range and mainframe storage products and software. In his current role, he leads a team of eight IT specialists supporting outsourced customers with a diverse range of installed storage products and solutions. His areas of expertise are IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (ITSM) backups, SAN infrastructure, tape libraries, and mainframe storage in general. He is a certified Storage Networking Systems Engineer/Professional.

Abbe Woodcock is a Consulting IT Specialist with the Advanced Technical Support (ATS) tape team in the Americas. She joined IBM in 1974 as a Program Support Representative for DOS/VS systems, then moved to a CICS/VS Level 2 Support position. After positions in SPD Development and Field Engineering Service Planning, she was a System Engineer for Large Systems. She became a Certified IT Architect while working in IBM Global Services. Since joining the ATS, she has supported z/OS and LTO tape products, and now supports the TS7500 Virtualization Engine and the TS7650G ProtecTIER De-duplication Gateway.
