IBM Power 595 Technical Overview and Introduction

An IBM Redpaper publication

Abstract

This IBM Redpaper provides a a large set feature hardware-focused processor, memory and I/O support feature descriptions supported by the POWER6 Power 570 and Power 595 servers. The goal of this paper is to ensure IBM System i and IBM System p heritage consumers understand the POWER6 capabilities on these servers with a focus on hardware technology and features starting with this single comprehensive document that covers the following IBM Power 570 and Power 595 Machine Type and Models (MTMs):
o POWER6 570 9406-MMA
o POWER6 570 9117-MMA
o POWER6 595 9119-FFA,

A companion redpaper is to be available for the POWER™ 6 520 and 550 MTMs - IBM Power 520 and Power 550 (POWER6) System Builder, REDP-4412. There are also POWER6 technical overview and introduction redpapers for the Power 520 (REDP-4403), Power 550 (REDP-4404), Power 570 (REDP-4405) and Power 595 (REDP-4440).

This redpaper does not replace the latest marketing materials, tools, and other IBM publications available, for example, at the IBM Systems Hardware Information Center http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/systems/scope/hw/index.jsp.

This Redpaper is based upon the current set of IBM Power Systems documentation available in various IBM publications and Power Systems Web sites but it also provides significant additional information - all in one document. This publication does point to these other sources for more detailed or more frequently updated information. Common POWER6 capabilities address in this publication include:
o PowerVM™ virtualization
o EnergyScale™ technology that provides features such as power trending, power-saving, thermal measurement, and processor napping
o Mainframe-based continuous reliability, availability, and serviceability.
o I/O feature terminology, technology, and technical descriptions
o Supported operating system release level requirements
o Hardware decimal floating point support

Machine Type Model chapters are included that specifically address processor, memory, and I/O features supported by that MTM. Following these MTM chapters is a large Feature Descriptions chapter and various specific topic chapters and appendixes.

Summaries of AIX and IBM i operating system capabilities and associated licensed program products available are also included.

Important: This publication is focused on the POWER6 Power 570 and Power 595 MTMs. However, many chapter contents, tables and appendixes in this publication include information that also applies to POWER6 Power 520 and Power 5250 MTMs. Specific Power 520 and Power 550 information not included in this publication includes descriptions of their MTM processor enclosure capabilities and I/O features supported only on the Power 520 and Power 550 MTMs.

Note: This draft is complete. However, portions are under IBM review and content has not been formally edited. Please submit feedback that addresses current content that is not clear or missing information you want added directly to:
