Description

Today's data center requires organizations to rethink their operational and organizational priorities. This results from changing economic trends and new technologies, and it is vital that all components of the solution help you build a cost-effective, robust, and agile operation that aligns with business goals, and also protects you for any future business and technological advances.

IBM b-type SAN switches (Gen 6) provide the reliable, scalable and high performance Fibre Channel connectivity required to capitalize on enterprise-wide data sharing and collaboration. IBM offers a comprehensive range of intelligent SAN switches, directors and routers to connect servers and storage systems in local, campus, metro and global infrastructures. Coupled with IBM Spectrum Virtualize, IBM Storage, and the IBM Software Defined Storage portfolio they provide the perfect platform.

IBM b-type Gen 6 FC combined with Fabric Vision technology is critical to modernize clients infrastructures when upgrading to IBM Flash arrays, virtualizing older storage arrays with IBM Spectrum Virtualize, and migrating data to the flash arrays.

This residency will articulate and cover the following:
*IBMs approach to the data centre, based on its b-type portfolio, in a considered and thoughtful manner that takes into account the current pain points and how to identify them.
*How to support a Cloud strategy. Including, how FC fits into cloud and software defined solutions
* How modernizing the SAN infrastructure is essential to meet future flash-based storage requirements. (When modernizing your storage and/or server, what are the best practices and high level steps for modernizing your storage network without disruption. How, where, and when to add new switches to legacy SAN and where to attach new storage products, how to migrate)
*Overview and pointers to other key modernization resources including SAN Health tool and existing Redbooks for extension solutions, migration & troubleshooting guides, integration into IBM tools, and Brocade AMP appliance.
*When, where and How to use Gen 6 products
*When, where and how to use the key b-type Fabric Vision features before, during and after the modernization effort to help ensure highest availability, performance, visibility including the new use cases for the Gen 6 Flow Monitoring IO Insight capability.

Experience with the following technologies is sought:
*Gen 6 Switches
*USpectrum Virtualize
*Software-Defined Storage (SDS)
*Flash (all flash arrays)
*Cloud
*Compute
*Network
*Storage

Implementation concepts will be the main focus but some areas will need specific how to segments and some troubleshooting methods

Residents will also need to describe approaches to migration, redundancy and resiliency, RAS (reliability, availability, serviceability) and describe the benefits of different technologies and protocols. Best practices for troubleshooting and performance should also be covered. We will be working with the latest updates for next year, so this residency will start in 2017, but finalize some latest updates in second quarter of 2018. 80% of the publication will be completed in 2017 and final details will be added to the book in 2018 second quarter. This residency will have a 3 week on site residency and a 1 week remote residency in the first quarter of 2018.

Residents will be expected to describe on their application the relevant skills and experience that they have in these areas, and also be prepared to document the knowledge they have gained in the field so that their experiences can be distributed to a wider audience using the IBM Redbooks brand.
