Abstract

IBM Workplace Designer is an intuitive visual development tool that allows application developers, designers, and others to easily create and deploy components for the IBM Workplace environment. IBM Workplace Designer Version 2.5 features a visual design interface and powerful scripting capabilities that are familiar to Domino application developers and are intuitive to Microsoft™ Visual Basic developers and other script developers. It is based on Eclipse and supports a service-oriented architecture (SOA), incorporating the following industry standards:

- XML for data access and exchange
- Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE)
- HTML/CSS for portal development
- JavaScript for the programming language

This Redpaper provides an overview of the features and functionality of IBM Workplace Designer 2.5 and shows application developers how to build applications for IBM Workplace Collaboration Services 2.5 and IBM Workplace Services Express 2.5. We introduce a sample status tracking application, and show you the specific step-by-step development techniques that you can use to build the component. We discuss specific design elements in depth within the context of building the sample application and provide best practices, hints, and tips for collaborative development with Workplace Designer.

The audience for this Redpaper is primarily application developers with a background in Java, Domino development, Javascript, or other visual scripting languages.
