Identifying AS/400 tape devices for applications

Applications do not refer to tape devices by device description or hardware resource name as AS/400 does. Instead they show tape devices in one of three ways:

If you need these values, do this:

  1. On Windows server, click Start, Settings, then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on Tape Devices.
  3. Click on the Properties button.
  4. The properties box has two tabs, one marked General and one marked Settings. The General tab shows the AS/400 manufacture-feature-model number and the device map number on Windows server. The Settings tab shows the manufacture-feature-model number and the port-bus-target id-lun numbers.

If all the tape devices on your AS/400 are of different types, this information is enough to distinguish between them in Windows server applications. If you have multiple tape devices of the same manufacture-feature-model number, you must experiment to determine which device you are using.
