Allocating the AS/400 tape drive to Windows server on AS/400

To use an AS/400 tape drive from the Windows server console, you must vary it off on AS/400 and lock it on Windows server. You must lock the device before starting applications or their services.

Note:Some tape devices report in under more than one device description. Tape libraries (3590, 3570, and so forth) report in as devices (TAPxx) as well as tape libraries (tapemlbxx), where xx is a number. AS/400 Integration for Windows Server does not support tape libraries. Therefore, if your device has a tape library description, you must vary off both the tape device and the tape library device before locking the device on the Windows server.

To transfer control of the AS/400 tape drive to a Windows server, follow these steps:

  1. Vary off the tape drive on AS/400:
    1. At the AS/400 command line, type WRKCFGSTS *DEV *TAP, and press the Enter key. The Work with Configuration Status display appears.
    2. In the Opt column next to the resource name of your tape drive, type 2 to vary off the tape drive.
    3. Press Enter. The tape drive varies off.
  2. Lock the tape device on Windows server:

    For Windows NT 4.0:

    1. From the Start menu on Windows server, choose Programs, then AS400 Windows Server, then AS400 Devices.
    2. In the AS400 Available Devices list, click on the resource name of your AS/400 tape drive.
    3. Click Lock to make the tape drive accessible to Windows server. Windows server can now use the tape device.
    4. Click Done to close the AS400 Devices program.

    For Windows 2000:

    1. On Windows 2000 server, click START, then Settings, then Control Panel, then System.
    2. Select the Hardware tab, then the Device Manager button.
    3. If tape drives are configured, a Tape Drives icon appears. Expand that icon.
    4. Select one of the tape drive icons that is displayed and double-click it.
    5. The general tab shows the device type (feature and model number), the manufacturer (IBM), and the location (port bus, target-id, and lun numbers).
  3. If you need other information about the tape device to enable an application to recognize it, see Identifying AS/400 tape devices for applications. If you have problems, see Troubleshooting tape problems on Windows server on AS/400.
Note:If you shut down Windows server or Windows server fails before you unlock the tape drive, it unlocks automatically. However, it is still in a varied off state on AS/400.
