Windows NT servers can provide the Windows Internet Naming
Service (WINS), which allows clients to map server system names to their
actual TCP/IP addresses. WINS is a dynamic naming service that resolves
NetBIOS computer names to IP addresses. Although AS/400 cannot act as a
WINS server, it can act as a WINS proxy. This enables non-WINS clients
to obtain name resolution from WINS. A WINS proxy receives broadcasted
name requests from non-WINS clients and resolves them by directing queries to
a WINS server.
You can specify an address for a network WINS server on the AS/400
NetServer WINS configuration - Next start dialog in Operations
Navigator. You can then configure clients to connect to AS/400
NetServer by using the WINS server.
You can use a WINS server with AS/400 NetServer in the following
ways:
- Configure PC clients with the WINS server IP address. Proper
configuraton allows clients to send all WINS requests directly to the network
WINS server. This is the best solution for WINS clients that are in the
same workgroup (domain) as AS/400 NetServer when you do not configure AS/400
NetServer as a WINS proxy. See Configuring AS/400 NetServer with the address of the network WINS server for more information.
- Place PC clients in the same subnet (network segment) as the WINS
server. The WINS server automatically handles name resolution requests
with no additional PC client configuration. This is the best solution
for WINS clients that are in the same subnet as the WINS server and when you
configure AS/400 NetServer for WINS.
- Configure PC clients with the AS/400 NetServer IP address as a WINS server
proxy. You must then configure AS/400 NetServer with the address of the
real WINS server. In this case, clients connect to AS/400 as a WINS
proxy server. AS/400 NetServer routes all WINS requests to the WINS
server. Using AS/400 NetServer as a WINS proxy is the best solution for
WINS clients that are in the same workgroup as AS/400 NetServer.
- Place PC clients in the same subnet as AS/400 with AS/400 NetServer
configured with a WINS server IP address. In this case, clients connect
to AS/400 as a WINS proxy server. AS/400 NetServer routes all WINS
requests to the WINS server. Using AS/400 NetServer as a WINS proxy is
the best solution for WINS clients that are in the same subnet as the WINS
server. In this scenario, PC clients do not require any additional
configuration to use WINS.
Once you configure your PC clients and AS/400 NetServer with WINS
addresses, you do not need to perform any additional network
configuration. PC clients can now locate and connect to AS/400
NetServer by using WINS.
