Where to Find Today and Yesterday's System i Technical Marketing Deliverables

Abstract

Readers can search the ITSO Redbooks Web site, subscribe to the "what is latest" in the ITSO, or contact their favorite project leader to locate the latest System i technical marketing deliverable. In each case, the answer to the question "where is" or "when is it available in hardcopy" changes as System i announcement requirements change throughout the year.

This Technote serves as a pointer to today's technical marketing deliverables. It is intended to be a "look here first" document to understand the publishing cycle of the following technical marketing deliverables produced by the System i ITSO:

IBM System i Overview: Models 515, 525, 570, 595, and More (REDP5052)
IBM System i5 V5R4 Technical Overview IBM Redbooks publication (SG24-7271-00)
IBM System i5 Handbook IBM i5/OS Version 5 Release 4 January 2006 (SG24-7486-00)
IBM eServer i5 and iSeries System Handbook i5/OS Version 5 Release 3 October 2005 -- Draft (GA19-5486-27)
IBM System i5, eServer i5, and iSeries Systems Builder IBM i5/OS Version 5 Release 4 - January 2006 (SG242155-12)
PCI and PCI-X Placement Rules for IBM System i models: i5/OS V5R3 and V5R4 (Fourth edition) (REDP4011-03)
PCI Card Placement Rules for the IBM eServer iSeries Server OS/400 Version 5 Release 2 (REDP3638)
IBM eServer iSeries and AS/400e System Builder: IBM OS/400 Version 4 Release 3 - i5/OS Version 5 Release 2 (REDP0542)
IBM eServer AS/400e RISC System Builder Version 3 Release 6 - Version 5 Release 2 (REDP0342)
AS/400 CISC System Builder (REDP0042)

This Technote serves as a pointer to today's technical marketing deliverables. This information is current as of April 2007.

Contents

Have you ever asked the question “Where is the latest System Handbook?” or “When will the System Builder be available in hardcopy?”
This Technote summarizes the content of each of the IBM Redbooks publications addressing technical marketing content. You can also search the ITSO Redbooks Web site, subscribe to the "what is latest" service (
https://w3.itso.ibm.com/itsoapps/redbooks.nsf/subscribe?OpenForm), or contact their favorite project leader, all to keep the latest information readily available to help with your System i installations.

During 2006 the number of pages in the System Handbook and System Builder documents was determined to be "too many." Some "older system models" and "older i5/OS releases" information was moved out of the System Handbook and System Builder and placed in other IBM Redbooks publications. The resulting System Handbook and System Builder publications still have a large number of pages. During 2007 it was determined there would be a restructuring of software and hardware information into other documents - not integrated into the then latest System Handbook and System Builder. For 2007 the Redpaper "IBM System i Overview: Models 515, 525, 570, 595, and More." REDP-5052, should be used instead for system builder level information. It contains SG24-2155-12 level information as well as new hardware announced during 2007. REDP-5052 also contains i5/OS-based software enhancements introduced during 2007 - all in one publication.

As for the System Handbook, SG24-7486-00 contains hardware information as well as software information up through May 2006. This book will not be updated during 2007. Therefore the software content is still up to date until May 2006. For summaries of new and enhanced i5/OS-based software introduced from May 2006 through September 2007, we recommend using the following publications:

  • IBM System i5 V5R4 Technical Overview, SG24-7271. This contains hardware and software announced up to March 2007 and provides more detailed information than would be included in the System Handbook.
  • IBM System i Overview: Models 515, 525, 570, 595, and More, REDP-5052

There are other important technical marketing IBM Redbooks publications, that are available, including publications documenting older System i hardware and i5/OS releases, and PCI placement rules for all hardware levels supported on System i. Use the following table to find all the available technical marketing IBM Redbooks publications you may need to reference.
