Abstract

Implementing an On Demand Operating Environment is fundamental to becoming an On Demand Business. Such an environment enables a business to implement new decisions in a timely manner. An On Demand Operating Environment is built on the concepts of virtualization, provisioning, and orchestration of resources, tied together loosely using a service-oriented architecture.

  • Virtualization allows resources to be manipulated in a uniform and flexible manner leading to automation. Previously manual tasks can be run 24 hours-a-day with little supervision.
  • Provisioning tasks, which can take up to two weeks, can be completed with fewer errors in less than a couple of hours. Virtualization and provisioning are prerequisites for orchestration.
  • Orchestration in an On Demand Operating Environment is the ability to repurpose and align hardware and software resources to meet fluctuating traffic conditions, with no manual intervention, while meeting service-level agreements for the application.

This IBM Redbook encompasses a collection of white papers that were published in 2004 and early 2005 by the HiPODs team. Most of the papers pertain to the major concepts of the On Demand Operating Environment. This redbook consists of the following parts:

  • Part 1: IT resource optimization
  • Part 2: Business process optimization
  • Part 3: Solution performance, scalability, and high availability
