Capacity Planning for Logical Partitioning on the IBM eServer iSeries Server

An IBM Redbooks publication

Abstract

Logical partitioning (LPAR) gives you the ability to divide a single iSeries server into a number of independent systems capable of supporting an integrated operating environment. This IBM Redbook identifies an approach to capacity planning when you consolidate multiple AS/400 systems to a single iSeries server.

LPAR planning considerations have become increasingly important as LPAR functionality is extended. This redbook introduces you to the basic LPAR concepts and areas in which LPAR can be deployed in today’s rapidly evolving commercial marketplace. Then, it reviews the capacity planning cycle and identifies the key business variables that are essential to the process.

This redbook shows you an approach that you can adopt to manage the capacity planning process. It examines the collection, analysis, and modeling of data, which is critical in determining individual partition requirements. It also includes a practical example to illustrate the process.
