IMS Version 7 and Java Application Programming

Redbooks logo

An IBM Redbooks publication

Abstract

This IBM Redbooks publication is intended for customers who wish to exploit the Java language support provided by IMS Version 7.1. Its prime audience are IMS and Java application programmers, who can now use Java to develop IMS application transactions, and IMS system programmers, who support IMS applications development. This book will be helpful to any organization that would like to access IMS databases by using Java application programming.

As Java coding skills have become more readily available in the IT employment marketplace, application development with Java has become the de facto coding standard. This book assumes a certain level of knowledge of IMS, Java, and UNIX. It covers the base concepts of the Java environment, the S/390 software and hardware requirements which enable Java on the Enterprise platform, and how to download, install, and configure the Java related application development environment for your workstation, IMS/ESA, and OS/390.

We discuss two IMS applications that were developed within IBM, using the Java API to IMS. The Telephone Directory IVP application uses the Java Native DL/I interface, and the IMS Auto Dealership application employs the JDBC interface from Java to IMS. We also provide guidance on debugging, problem determination, and some of the development limitations you may encounter.
