Abstract

This redbook provides a practical guide to IMS connectivity, with a special emphasis on connecting to the Internet. Each of the options available for connecting your IMS systems to the outside world are described, with practical examples and advice on their implementation.

This redbook will help you install, tailor and configure your IMS/ESA Version 5 (or later) systems to an Internet Web Server, thereby making your IMS systems more widely accessible than ever before. The subject of security is explored, detailing the available options for securing your precious production systems, and advice on how to choose from amongst these options.

This redbook gives a broad understanding of the many different communications architectures that can be used to access IMS. It will also help you design and create a solution to the problem of making your IMS data available to the world via the Internet.

The redbook introduces the Intenet from an IMS perspective, to remove some of the mystery surrounding the new jargon and terminology. The book continues on to describe how to set up a simple Internet Server, and then how to connect your IMS systems to this server with TCP/IP Sockets, Advanced Program to Program Communication (APPC), MQ Series, Remote Procedure Calls, Net.Data, Host On-Demand, IMS Web, and VisualAge for Smalltalk. We conclude with more detail on how to create applications using these protocols to access IMS from the Web Server. Examples of some code are available in the appendices.

This will be especially useful for any organization that wants to make their IMS systems available for access from the Internet in a secure manner.
