Backup and recovery of a SQL Server database is tightly associated with a the physical layout of the database. Understanding the layout is critical when you are consolidating multiple SQL Server instances and databases, and it is an important part of any database design, especially when multiple databases share the same IBM System Storage N series storage device. This IBM Redpaper describes the relationships between the physical storage of SQL Server and SnapManager for SQL Server. We analyze and illustrate various methodologies for the layout of the physical structure of database files on virtual disks, their implications for backup and restore, and the use of SnapMirror.
