Introduction to WebSphere InterChange Server V4.2 Performance Tuning

This Redpaper provides key tuning recommendations for enterprise application integration (EAI) solutions based on WebSphere InterChange Server. This paper is not meant to be a comprehensive treatment of performance tuning, but instead a summary of experiences obtained through the use of the product.

There are few easy answers to a performance problem, or what is perceived as a performance problem, in a complex system made up of multiple hardware and software components.

For those who are either considering or are in the very early stages of implementing an WebSphere InterChange Server solution, this document should provide a useful performance information reference, serving as a supplemental starting point for setup, tuning, and configuration information. It provides a useful introduction to many of the issues affecting InterChange Server performance and can act as a guide for making rational first choices in terms of configuration and performance settings.

Steve Garde is a Software Engineer with the System Performance group in Austin, Texas. His responsibilities include performance analysis and evaluation of the IBM Business Integration software, focusing on current and future releases of WebSphere InterChange Server.

Gary Hunt is a Senior Consulting I/T Architect with the WebSphere Business Integration Services team. His focus is to interface between the WebSphere Business Integration Services team and the Systems Performance group located in Austin, Texas. Previously, Mr. Hunt served as a consultant in the WebSphere BI Services area and in the AIM Services area on large EAI projects. Mr. Hunt received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Riaz Hussain is an Advisory Engineer working with the System Performance group in Austin, TX. He had been doing performance analysis on WebSphere Business Integration products for the last year. He has done, among other things, performance analysis and developed hardware and software performance tools, including performance tracing facilities, and Java byte-code modification and injection tools for IBM.

Geert Van de Putte is an IT Specialist at the International Technical Support Organization, Raleigh Center. He is a subject matter expert for messaging and business integration and has seven years of experience in the design and implementation of WebSphere MQ-based application integration solutions. He has published several Redbooks about messaging and business integration solutions. Geert has also taught several classes about messaging, business integration, and workflow. Before joining the ITSO, Geert worked at IBM Global Services, Belgium, where he designed and implemented EAI solutions for customers in many industries. Geert holds a Master of Information Technology degree from the University of Ghent in Belgium.
