Abstract

The IBM WebSphere Development Tools for iSeries is a complete package of premium AS/400 and iSeries application program development tools. These tools help you quickly develop iSeries and AS/400-based applications for e-business.

You can you do this by using your choice of traditional 5250 green screen interfaces, HTML browser interfaces, or GUI-based interfaces on workstations running the Windows operating system. The features of WebSphere Development Tools allow you to:

- Generate Java to Web-enable your RPG applications.
- Write host or server code with the CODE/400 workstation-based client/server development environment.
- Develop and maintain applications in many AS/400 languages, including RPG and Java.

This IBM Redpaper shows you how to install, tailor, and configure WebSphere Development Tools for iSeries. In addition, we will demonstrate how to use two new and exciting components of the WebSphere Development Tools for iSeries:

- WebFacing Tool (First Edition) which helps you build Web interfaces to existing 5250 applications by converting at development time the Display File Source (DDS) into JavaServer Pages (JSP) and Java data beans. This requires little change to the application's business logic and is an easy and cost-effective method to convert with no separate tool costs or runtime charges.

- IBM WebSphere Studio for iSeries is part of the IBM WebSphere Development Tools for iSeries. It provides an easy-to-use tool set that helps reduce time and effort when creating, managing and debugging multi-platform Web applications. We will demonstrate creating an interaction between a web front end and an RPG backend using Design Time Control (DTC), Publishing Set Up Wizard and the Web Interaction Wizard.
