The IBM zEnterprise System

Announcing the IBM zEnterprise EC12

IBM zEnterprise EC12

The zEnterprise EC12 (zEC12) is the world's fastest and most scalable enterprise server with unmatched security and reliability. The zEC12 builds on the strengths of its predecessor (the IBM zEnterprise 196), and was designed to help overcome problems in today's IT infrastructures while providing a foundation for the future.

The zEC12 also continues the evolution of integrated hybrid systems, introducing the zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX) Model 003, and an updated zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager.

  • - IBM zEnterprise BladeCenter Extension (zBX)

The zBX provides the capability to run the wide variety of applications typically found in UNIX and x86 architectures, under the proven System z hardware management capabilities. The zBX supports select POWER7 blades running AIX, System x blades running Linux and Microsoft Windows, and IBM WebSphere® DataPower® Integration Appliance XI50 for zEnterprise.

  • - IBM zEnterprise Unified Resource Manager

Unified Resource Manager is part of the Hardware Management Console (HMC). It provides integrated management across all elements of the zEnterprise System. The Unified Resource Manager lets you discover, integrate, monitor, and dynamically manage your hybrid computing resources as a single logical virtualized environment.

The zEC12 has a redesigned zEnterprise processor chip. It is the first six-core chip in mainframe history and operates at an industry leading, high frequency, 5.5 GHz. The zEC12 is a scalable symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) that can be configured with up to 101 processors running concurrent production tasks with up to 3 TB of memory. It introduces several PCIe I/O features, such as exploitation of StorageClass Memory through the Flash Express feature, and technologies, such as the IBM System z Advanced Workload Analysis Reporter (IBM zAware), an appliance with cutting edge pattern recognition analytics that uses “heuristic techniques” and represents the next generation of system health monitoring.

IBM has again delivered a smarter approach to using and managing computing resources with the zEC12. Through the zEnterprise System's unique hybrid computing model (combining mainframe, POWER, and System x resources into a single optimized system), applications can run where they run best, while being managed efficiently and seamlessly from one point of control.
