This seems to be a great learning material to know about mainframes. I look forward to read it

It is glad to see there is a Chinese version finally, though it is just a translated script.

I bought a hardcopy version few months ago to study for the test 000-Z05. :)

btw, what about translating it to Portuguese? Does anyone wants to help?

Are the samples available for download anywhere?

Posted by Mr. Michael Ebbers on 25 January 2012 at 4:52

Mr. McCarthy, please cite a figure or example from the book that contains a sample that you are looking to download. If you are referring to exercises that run on a System z, those are available.

PDF document seem to be corrupted : stop downloading after 270 kb

Posted by Mr. Michael Ebbers on 1 March 2012 at 1:04

Mr Fallai, I was able to save the PDF of this book to my hard drive using either Firefox or Internet Explorer. I was also able to open the complete book using Firefox. I did experience problems browing the PDF using IE, which I will report to the ITSO support group. Thanks for the note.

If you can't download the pdf version, please email me at I've notified REDBOOKS and waiting on a response.

web master here... I am not able to replicate the problem with my ie, firefox or chrome. can someone provide details of their os, ie version and anything else that may help debug?
Please note the reading tips provided from the abstract page. If you cannot open a pdf from within your browser you definitely can right mouse and download the pdf and open with your viewer of choice locally.

It's good to see a well written instructional style intro to Mainframe systems, and zOS basics.
We have discontinued the coding of cylindes, tracks, and blocks for more than 20 years, and encourage users to code space in records. I did see a small footnote mentioning records. A future revision to the manual should de-emphasize the cryptic terms, and emphasize more logical coding.

Please let me know where I can download the datasets used in the exercises (the text references "yourid.*"). I tried using the FTP Listing of /redbooks/ at for sg246366, but this appears to contain instructions for setting up the datasets rather than the data itself.
