I am missing a description how to recover a HMC from a backup without doing a reinstall. There is an option for that on the Recovery CD but nowhere a description.

You must include the information in this link in the Redbook: http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.NSF/DocNumber/576502678 We recently got hit by this after going from CR4 to CR6 and restoring CCD data. The CCD data restored but there were issues and ended up reinstalling/configuring the HMC pair from scratch. Section 6.2.1 states "Attention: You cannot restore the HMC Data backup on different versions of HMC software." but there is no such warning about restoring CCD across HMC models.

Thanks Mr. Gilson. Perhaps I can add a statement to make things more clear over the next couple of days.

Maybe good idea is to include HW specification and installation requirements to a book. For instance Voltage expected, number of ETH ports available, HMC rear view, etc..
There is no single book where you can find information regarding physical planning and installation for an HMC.
